Urinary Catheter Care
COURSE OVERVIEW
This course is especially suited for aged care and disability carers or support workers delivering care through an NDIS provider or at an aged care service. The course is written in line with the NDIS skill descriptors/practice standards and is delivered by experienced AHPRA registered nurses. Students of this course will learn to safely and effectively:
- Adhere to infection control protocols in relation to urinary catheter care.
- Change and discard catheter bags.
- Keep accurate charts and records.
- Check catheter placement.
- Observe skin condition near the catheter site.
- Identify and address/report catheter blockages.
- Respond to/report dislodged catheters.
- Recognize and report indicators of declining health.
- Detect and respond to signs of infection.
Students will gain a basic understanding of the urinary system for males and females; hydration; types of catheters; common complications associated with using different types of catheters, indicators of complications that require intervention and understanding when to involve a health practitioner. *If support workers practice a high intensity role/insert intermittent catheters, please speak to Unified Quality Training staff to discuss further training options.

Students will gain a basic understanding of common skin integrity risks; common indications of infection and required responses; implications of prolonged or worsening infection; purpose and methods for positioning and turning to manage pressure and choking risks; implications of wound management for delivering daily support activities such as showering, toileting, mealtime assistance and mobility.
